Story
ln 1980 Clive Aggett and Micky Fernandes walked from Nanyuki to Mombasa raising £8,000 for the Nanyuki Cottage Hospital. Inspired by these two ranchers from Laikipia, Charlie Dyer challenged himself to walk 650 kms to raise funds in support of improved healthcare for Kenyan communities still dependent on the valuable services of the Cottage Hospital and its new additional micro-hospital Gundua near Timau.
Charlie originally planned to walk through the wilds of Northern Kenya: along the shores of the eastern side of Lake Turkana, through the South Horr Valley, traversing the Baragoi Plains and Karisia Hills into Laikipia and finishing in Nanyuki.
However, due to persisting drought and troubles in the North this plan had to change and the decision was taken to head south along a longer but safer distance, truer to the original fundraising route.
With his new e-bike safari company (@wildrideskenya) up and running and associated time pressures and business commitments the switch was also made from walking to bicycling.
So a new journey was planned, no less epic, from the Gundua Healthcentre near Kisima in the shadow of Mount Kenya to Vasco da Gama Point, Malindi. 736 kilometres mostly off-road.
Charlie set out on 11th May and reached his final destination seven and a half days later with a minor bit of chaffing but still full of beans. He averaged 7 hours riding and 98km per day.
Charlie hopes to raise £8000 for the Cottage Hospital’s Needy Patient fund enabling treatment for the most vulnerable in Laikipia. Any funds raised above the initial goal of £8000 will be shared with Mount Kenya Trust and For Rangers.
For Rangers is kindly hosting One Wild Walk’s Justgiving page. For Rangers is a campaign raising money to improve the lives of rangers that protect Africas most endangered species every day. The Rangers benefit directly from the services of Nanyuki Cottage Hospital which treats all the wildlife Rangers and Scouts across the Laikipia region.
