On the night of December 2nd, 1984, a Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India, began leaking 27 tons of the deadly gas methyl isocyanate. None of the six safety systems designed to contain such a leak were operational, allowing the gas to spread throughout the city.
Half a million people were exposed to the gas and 8-10,000 died within 72 hours and at least 25,000 have died, to date, as a result of their exposure. More than 120,000 people still suffer from ailments caused by the accident and the subsequent pollution at the plant site.
Toxic waste dumped at the site was never cleared after the disaster and has been contaminating the drinking water for miles around the factory. Tens of thousands of poor families have relied on this poisoned water as their primary supply and they have been slowly, but surely, poisoned. This is Bhopal's second disaster.
The Bhopal Medical Appeal funds two clinics in Bhopal and they are the only places where anybody affected by the toxic gas or the contaminated water can receive the free treatment they deserve.
