Story
Lucy and I have been married for 8 years and have adorable Ludo who is 2.5.
We wanted to have a baby after a year of being married. It took 5 years for our much longed for son to arrive. Lucy suffered 3 miscarriages between 2015 and 2018, in 2018 we lost our baby at 22 weeks. Each miscarriage has been devastating and takes a massive toll not only on poor Lucy’s body, but the psychological damage is also huge. Entering in the spirit of being pregnant is exciting, others who are pregnant at the same time become aware that you’ll all be in the same ‘team’ when the babies arrive. Diaries are marked, dates inscribed and plans made. Then suddenly, everything is stolen away like some horrible, gruesome, bloody nightmare. At 22 weeks, Lucy actually had to deliver the baby and our whole world was rocked. It was an extremely surreal experience and we were carried by the most incredible close friends and family we are lucky enough to have, we will always remember their kindness. Lucy’s mother did some research and suggested we contact Tommy’s as soon as possible.
We didn’t go to Tommy’s for any counselling as were lucky to have such amazing friends who we leant on heavily, but were interested to get to the bottom of the cause of these 3 miscarriages. Lucy was immediately signed up to the clinic at St Mary’s Paddington where she was extensively tested and scanned for abnormalities. It transpired that Lucy needed surgery on her womb as it was slightly heart shaped and was also advised to take blood thinning injections for any future pregnancies, a high dose of progesterone and have a cervical stitch.
The Tommy’s research team and excellent team of consultants led by Raj Rai gave us hope. We and they had a plan and felt confident our miracle baby would one day arrive. In 2019 Lucy was again pregnant and in February 2020 darling Ludo was born. In 2021 Lucy had another early miscarriage, but is now pregnant again (6th time) and is past the first trimester and being very closely monitored by the clinic at St Mary’s Paddington.
I am so grateful to Tommy’s and know they have helped so many in the face of darkness, our story is very personal and has shaped our last 6 years of marriage, but we are so happy to have our growing little family and it has be worth the agonising wait. I am cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats on the 10th- 18th September 2022 (8 days), and would be so grateful for any donations to the Tommy’s charity. I am practising in my jelly pants and dreading it, but know it will be one of the best most challenging things I’ll ever do!
