Story
The Charity..
Pancreatic cancer is a tough one but we’re taking it on. It is tough to diagnose, tough to treat, tough to research and tough to survive. For too long this disease has been sidelined. We want to make sure that everyone affected by it gets all the help they need. We are supporting those affected by the disease, investing in ground breaking research, lobbying for greater recognition of pancreatic cancer and being a voice for everyone involved in the fight. Together we are taking on pancreatic cancer.
The Event...
The race is challenging! The organisers sell it as "One of the toughest triathlons in the world"... consisting of:
- 1 mile swim in Ullswater - which tends to be one of the colder lakes - typically between 14 and 18 degrees (when I did this event in 2009 it was below 13 degrees and the organisers were forced to shorten the swim...).
- The bike is 38 miles and includes the infamous "Struggle" to the top of the Kirkstone Pass (1489ft). Of course - everything that goes up must come down, so there's also lots of free-wheeling and as the start and finish are in the same transition area - arguably it's flat!??!!
- As the name suggests - the run is a 9 mile fell run up and down Hellvellyn (3118ft) - for which you must take normal fell running kit (fluids & food - there are no drink stations!, clothes, survival blanket, whistle & map - although hopefully there'll be someone in front of me to follow!).
