Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On 16th June 2018, Paul Harlow, Dean Fletcher, Richard Henson and Neal Ponton are cycling 98miles from Stapleford Nottingham to the Clock Tower Skegness in aid of Kidscan Children's Cancer Research.

In December 2017 Paul and Dean spoke about taking up cycling, Something neither had done for many years. Dean suggested that they cycle 98 miles from Stapleford Nottingham to The Clock Tower in Skegness. Dean also suggested that they try and raise some money for the charity that Paul yearly fund-raisers for. However it was decided that on this occasion to choose a different charity, one that is dedicated to children cancer research "Kidscan UK". Richard and Neal were asked in early January if they would like to be part of the team. They were thrilled to be asked and fully support the chosen charity.

Since January four (slightly overweight some more than others) middle aged men have been getting up at the crack of dawn on a Sunday. We got our rusty old cycles from the back of the garage and started pedalling round the streets of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Pedalling is an understatement. We have spent plenty of time at the roadside fixing flat tyres, (wonder whose bike that was). Picking each other up off the road when we've fallen off, (which happens very regularly). Giving our poor families grief when we've come back battered and bruised, aching with sore arses and chafed in some very strange places. One of us even ended up with a visit to A&E. Following these mishaps we decided to have a team meeting . The outcome was too invest in new bicycles, cycling shorts, helmets all the gear to make us look the part, as we knew we'd never get to Skegness the way we were going, unless it was by car.

By the middle of April we have been out every Sunday, weather no exception, rain, wind, ice, sleet and snow hasn't stopped us (even on holiday we hired cycles). What started out as a bit of fun riding 5 -10 miles a week has now become very competitive. We are averaging between 45- 50 miles on a Sunday morning and even going out some evenings. Blood sweat and tears (and I mean tears) to the point where some of us have thought of jacking it in, throwing the bikes down and catching a lift home. But with support and encouragement from each other it has spurred us on and given us the determination to achieve our goal.

Please help and support our efforts and make all our hard work worthwhile. We have even thought of joining a cycling club ( well some of us have). Your generous contributions will go directly to Kidscan we can't do it without you.
