As a violinist I am privileged to have a salary at this incredibly difficult time for everyone in the arts. Musicians are mostly freelancers, and mostly not paid very much. In a crisis such as this, people in many lines of work have found their income stream has suddenly vanished. Governmental help is available for those with a salary, but freelancers are not being given the same protection. The arts are already struggling with reduced funding year on year despite bringing £21.2bn to the UK economy. The coronavirus will undoubtedly push already stretched budgets past the point of rescue, and much of the work musicians were depending upon will vanish. We turn to Help Musicians in times of strain, and their support has never been more fundamental. Whilst we are unable to leave our homes, maybe those of us who are fortunate could donate a little of the money we would otherwise spend to support the efforts of Help Musicians.
