Welcome to NJ Ride For The Cure!
The four BMW motorcycle clubs in New Jersey have gotten together in the past running fundraising events for various worthy causes.
The clubs are at it again – we’re putting together a fundraiser in memory of one of our club members, Harold Gantz, who passed away last August, much too young, from prostate cancer, after living with it for a decade+.
Prostate cancer is often called by people the “good cancer”.. it’s anything but. In 2018 about 32,000 men died from the "good cancer".
Every 18 minutes, a man dies from prostate cancer. That figure is unacceptable, considering that the disease has a 99% survival rate when caught early. But not enough men are getting tested.
The takeaway from this is – it’s too often lethal, and about 1 out of 9 men will be diagnosed with it sometime in their lifetime. In our own local club – out of 55 members – there are 6 people who have or are dealing with prostate cancer. In surveying the other NJ BMW clubs – its roughly the same. I’m currently under treatment for it, as are more than 20 other BMW club members in NJ.
The four BMW clubs in NJ – Skylands BMW Riders, North Jersey BMW Riders, New Sweden BMW Riders, and NJ Shore BMW Riders are running a fundraiser in Harold’s memory, one year from the date he passed.
It’s happening on August 11th, 2019 at Cross Country Motorsports, Rt 27, Metuchen NJ at 12 noon. There will be food and door prizes, and we hope to have representatives from the prostate cancer organizations manning an information booth on site.
The beneficiaries of the fundraiser will be two prostate cancer organizations:
The Prostate Cancer Foundation – (PCF) funds independent research in prostate cancer treatments – and they’re searching for a cure. Over 84% of the funds donated to them goes directly to research. They are a worldwide organization with their primary location in the US, and they are very highly rated by charity rating groups.
The ZERO-Cancer organization is a US-based foundation, focused on funding research and supporting current prostate cancer victims. They also send over 83% of the funds they receive directly out to research grants and services for men suffering from prostate cancer. Again - another highly rated charity.
This will be a scavenger hunt sort of event - ridden at your own pace, solo or in groups you might care to form. Riding when you want to and how you want to. There will be no set route - instead, there will be goals - places in NJ that you've likely never been to. The list of goals will be revealed on August 1st There will also be information on how to document the sites. Each site visited gets you another door prize ticket! Couples can team up and get 2 door prize tickets as long as both have made a $20 (or more) donation to one of the foundations.
Registering for the event - only requires you making a minimum donation of $20 toward prostate cancer research at either foundation website. You will receive a receipt from the foundation which should be brought to the event - it's your ticket for entry.
Each person attending must have made a donation. You also will receive a door-prize ticket for each multiple of $20 you've donated (if you donate $100 - you'll get 5 door prize tickets.)
