Ride for Ceylon is an annual cycling fundraiser that began in 2017, uniting riders, donors, and volunteers to support the revival of Green Memorial Hospital (GMH) in Manipay, Northern Sri Lanka. Founded in 1848, GMH is Sri Lanka’s oldest teaching hospital, once a centre of excellence, now being restored thanks to this powerful community initiative. What started as the vision of the Trustees of the Friends of Manipay Hospital, a UK registered charity (No. 1113439), and many well-wishers, is more than just a cycle ride, it’s a mission of healing. Each year, cyclists take on a 450+ km ride from Colombo to Manipay, not just as a physical challenge, but as a mission to heal, reconnect, and rebuild lives in a region affected by decades of civil conflict. Funds raised go directly toward the redevelopment of GMH and related healthcare projects, delivering lasting impact to underserved communities. With safety, inclusivity, and team spirit at its core, Ride for Ceylon welcomes riders of all backgrounds and abilities. We also support other good causes chosen by our riders. Whether cycling, donating, or cheering us on, your support helps restore the Greatest Medical Heritage of Ceylon. All riders pay for their own travel, transportation and accommodation cost. Much of the ride logistic costs are supported by sponsors. Thereby enabling all donations to be applied to charitable work.

Story

Each year over forty cyclists from across the globe participate in a bike ride from Colombo, Sri Lanka to the war impacted Jaffna Peninsula. This year the journey begins on the 2nd of March and will continue for four days covering 480 km. This mammoth journey is starting from Colombo and ending in Jaffna, by stopping at Dambulla, Trincomalee and Mullaithivu. I have been training to join this charity ride for some time now, while also withstanding the current pandemic challenges.

In addition to the physical challenge, the weather in Sri Lanka is expected to be extremely hot and humid; so, the organisers have set the start time of each day ride to 4:00AM in order to avoid the midday sun and reach the set destination by 11:00AM.

Any donations and sponsorships received through this charity ride will be used to redevelop the Green Memorial Hospital in Jaffna, purchasing medical equipment and to continuously provide the invaluable medical services to the local community.

I would greatly appreciate your support and your motivation to accomplish this cause.

If possible, please also select gift aid as this would help to add additional amount for free from Tax relief.

Thank you 🙏🏽
