Story
Hello!
On the 22 June 2013, we are taking part in a fantastic race for charity.
The Highland Cross is a 50-mile duathlon (20 mile run, 30 mile cycle) traversing the spectacular Scottish Highlands coast to coast, west to east from Kintail through Glen Affric and Strathglass to Beauly.
Nina, Alison and Pete are currently PhD students in the School of Engineering & Computing Sciences at Durham University. Nina was inspired to take the Highland Cross challenge by her parents, Mary and Gavin, who have completed the race numerous times over the last few decades. The photograph below shows them crossing the finish line together in 1984, a few weeks before they got married. Alison is super keen to attempt anything outdoorsy and Pete is an avid fell runner and cyclist. Together, we have been training hard over the last few months for the challenge that lies ahead, and feel... semi prepared! Earlier this year we took part in a fantastic 16-mile race called Man V Horse (http://www.doresonlochness.co.uk/man_versus_horse) as part of our training, which was tough but great fun!
We are very much looking forward to taking part on Saturday 22 June and for the beer waiting for us at the end!
The event is organised by volunteers to raise funds for charities across the Highlands. Since 1983, over £3.4m has been raised and distributed in full to deserving causes. This year the charities benefitting include:
Calman Trust, Seaforth House, Puffin Hydrotherapy Pool, Lucky2BHere, CCAST Highland and Cantraybridge College.
