In the past year my friend Bart Weenink has undergone a bone marrow transplant for myelodysplastic syndrome . Following this I thought I needed to do something positive by raising some money for his nominated charity - The Anthony Nolan Trust. This charity also supported my uncle a few years ago when he had similar treatment for leukaemia.
Anyway, these pragmatic thoughts appear to be where my sanity ended as I now appear to be running the Edinburgh Marathon. Now ,those who know me well will agree that I am built for neither speed nor distance. However, I have studied marathon running from my armchair and it seems it has been possible for people to complete the feat dressed as stormtroopers, aeroplanes and rhinos.......,so how hard can it be ? Seriously though , please give generously to this fantastic charity and I promise I will get round the course one way or another !
Every day, Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with a blood cancer or blood disorder. We do this by matching incredible individuals willing to donate their stem cells to people who desperately need a lifesaving transplant. We also carry out cutting edge scientific research, fund specialist post-transplant nurses and support patients and their families through the transplant process and beyond. We won’t stop until we save the lives of everyone who needs a stem cell transplant. Every penny you donate brings us closer to that day.
