Story
Hi, so now feels like the right time to update you all on on my quest and and life long ambition to run a full marathon. I’ll explain …….
You may recall, on 4th October 2020, I completed the rearranged 40th virtual London Marathon, revised due to COVID-19 restrictions, by completing two half marathons in one day to achieve the 26.2 mile medal qualification. I still don’t consider this to be a marathon!!!
Little did I know what was to follow and only three weeks later aged 52 and in the best physical condition I have ever been, I thought 😀, was diagnosed with a neurological disorder leaving me unable to walk. Fast forward to today and after extensive physiotherapy and significant help from family, friends and medical professionals I am ready to try again.
To complicate things further, the last year has been extremely challenging recovering from two surgical procedures, mental health challenges and again needing a significant amount of rehabilitation to get me fit.
My running journey restarted in March ‘22 with a 10 week couch to 5k course to test the leg, knee and posture. The results were all good and so I started to train slowly, under the watchful eye of Wendy my darling wife, close friends and new running club friends with the aim of making it to the start line for the TCS London Marathon on 2nd October.
This weekend (21st August ‘22) and 21 months since my paralysis, saw me complete my longest single event run at 21 miles. With this significant moment achieved its time to fully commit and hopefully put the past two years behind me.
I cannot wait to experience this magical event when it returns to the London streets in all its glory and spectacle in 6 weeks time.
I still feel very humbled to have been given the opportunity to fulfill a life long ambition of running the London Marathon, something I often spoke to Mum and Dad about. Having lost both parents to heart disease / heart failure, there could be no better way than to run in their memory. Hopefully, with your generous support, raising an incredible amount of money to try and help prevent others from suffering too.
Please give what you can, i truly appreciate every penny donated. Your support will make a massive difference to the charity and give me the positive energy and determination I will need to make it to the finishing line in London.
Thank you so much, love Nigel x
