Story
When lockdown was announced on 23rd March last year I decided to cycle every day until it ended. Little did I know what that would involve. On 23rd March this year I reached day 365. I continue to cycle every day and on Saturday 3rd April I will reach day 376 when I intend to cover 100 miles cycling locally around Drumbeg. I will have spent over 700 hours in the saddle, burnt over 500,000 calories and covered close to 10,000 miles. Last year just before the pandemic took hold I spent a month in Egypt working among the asylum seeker and refugee community. Sadly some of these people find themselves on the wrong side of the law; sometimes for simply not having a visa. In prison conditions are tough. Many struggle with language and have no legal representation. The authorities provide little in the way of support or assistance and the individual prisoners are entirely dependent on outside support for food, clothing and medicine. Often their families are not in a position to provide this. The Anglican Church in Egypt however is actively involved in meeting these needs as well as providing pastoral care and training in trades and skills to help with the task of providing for themselves and their families as and when the prisoners are released. In these days of the pandemic this has never been more important. Please join with me in supporting this valuable work among some of the most forgotten people in our world today and for whom life is unimaginablly different than most of us.
