Story
L&D NICU
1 in 7 babies born at the L&D require specialist care
Every year the Bedfordshire Hospitals (L&D) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) treats over 1000 premature and critically ill babies.
We offer the highest level of neonatal intensive care possible and are one of only three high-level neonatal units in the East of England.
Because of this and an increasing birth rate, demand for our specialist services has significantly outstripped resources.
The Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are progressively building a new unit which is bigger and will provide more cots and better facilities to help treat even more babies at the L&D site.
The ongoing NICU Appeal launched to raise additional funds to buy extra equipment and enhance the unit to ensure that all the babies are treated in the best possible environment.
At the L&D we currently have three separate nurseries, one for intensive care and high dependency, one high dependency and one for predominantly special care babies. There are 37 cots in the Unit in total. 11 are intensive care cots, 8 are for high dependency and 18 are specials care cots and we eventually hope to expand the unit to provide up to 46 cots.
We need your help to raise an extra £1.5 million to help equip and enhance the new Unit. With all its specialist equipment the unit will be able to treat around 300 more babies each year and save even more precious lives.
Your support will make a huge difference.
