Taran left for Afghanistan on the 2nd June 2009 as part of the Advance Party with the 4 Rifles to take over from Op Herrick 10. On arrival in Afghanistan Tay became ill and was told by a comrade to go to the Med Centre in Camp Bastion. At first it was thought that he had a ruptured spleen but further investigation the Doctors found that his lymph nodes were inflamed so they decided to fly him home on June 5th 2009. On the flight home the plane stopped to refuel in Dubai at this point Tay became unconscious and fell into a coma. He arrived at Selly Oak Hospital Birmingham later that day (June 5th) still in a coma, he was diagnosed as having Burkitt's Lymphoma and he was given Chemo Therapy as a last resort on Saturday June 6th, still in a coma his vital signs seemed to improve, then he went downhill very quickly. Taran remained in a coma until his life support was switched of on Sunday the 7th of June at 10.35am he fought for an hour an 5 minutes until his heart gave up the fight. He died aged 21 years of age 12 days shy of his 22nd birthday, we have lived that weekend over and over for the past 2 years, 10 months and 5 days. Taran never set foot on British soil again after his flight out to Afghanistan on June the 2nd 2009, he will never be honoured or remembered for his service to his country yet received the Elizabeth Cross and had a full military burial.
