Story
In January 2022 I started the couch to 5k on a cold and drizzly Wednesday night, little did I know that in 10 months I would be running the London Marathon! I had watched my sister Lyndsey complete this event twice before and it wasn't something that I ever believed that I would be capable of achieving, so this is my biggest challenge to date.
Sadly we lost my mother to dementia in December 2019 after a 6 year decline and during this time we as a family faced so many difficult decisions and it was during these times that we turned to the lovely Admiral Nurses for help, advice and support. These nurses are there to offer support to the families and carers affected by all forms of dementia including Alzheimers disease. These nurses became our lifeline at times and they spent many hours answering our questions and providing practical hints and tips to ensure that Mum was able to maintain her independence for as long as possible. I will never be able to fully express how grateful I am personally for the support provided by the Admiral nurses, so to be able to fundraise to help other families access this support during one of the hardest times is something that I feel very passionately about.
These nurses are funded by The charity Dementia UK not the NHS
£225 could fund a new specialist dementia nurse to run
a full day of face-to-face appointments for families affected by young onset dementia (a diagnosis under the age of 65)
£1,125 could fund a new specialist dementia nurse for a whole week to support a community where people are struggling to access local dementia services
I understand that we are facing lots of financial uncertainty and it is not always possible to donate money but even to raise awareness of the role of Admiral Nurses and the services that they provide will make the past 10 months worthwhile, and believe me that I am not an enthusiastic runner.
