Story
Hey Folks.
My new challenge is to swim the length of Coniston Lake on 25 Jun (5.25miles), and then the length of Ullswater Lake on 16 Jul (7.5miles) in the Lake District.
I will be raising money for 2 great charities, Level Water, a charity supporting children with disabilities through swimming and Kids of UA, a fund to support Ukranian refugees.
KidsofUA has been chosen by a Ukranian family, a mother and her 2 children, 9 and 13, who are now living with my sister in the UK. The charity is on the ground in the Ukraine and was set up by volunteers and businessmen in a bomb shelter overnight to support and provide for orphans and mothers who have been left with nothing as a result of the Ukranian conflict.
I aim to raise £150 for level water. On completion of this goal, I will share a new page to raise funds for KidsofUA.
For those that know me must be thinking, sounds a pretty easy challenge for Nic being a swimmer her whole life, and done several OW swims.
Well let me put this challenge into perspective. 5.25miles is 336lengths of a 25m swimming pool, 7.5miles is 480lengths and in an outdoor lake at approx 14-19 degrees. (Standard swimming pool is 28-30degrees). This is by far the longest distance I will have swum outdoors, and the longest I will have swum in cold water. (I once, back in the day, did a 10k training session when I was pro, in a lovely warm swimming pool, with lots of breaks)
This is no 'dipping', this is full immersion for hours. Immersion in cold water means risk of hyperventilation, hyperthermia and inability to function properly (talking and movement) the longer you remain in the water, the higher this risk becomes.
So, what are you waiting for...let's get raising some money!
