Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my just giving page.
Since I was 18 months old, I was diagnosed with Reflex Anoxic Seizures, this is a condition which occurs mainly in young children but can occur at any age. Any unexpected stimulus such as pain, shock or fright can cause the heart and breathing to stop, the arms and legs will jerk and the body will stiffen, RAS is often misdiagnosed however I was lucky enough to have an accurate diagnosis from Professor Stevenson at Yorkhill Hospital back in 1987.
I lived with this condition until I was 16 years old, when I was fitted with a pacemaker. The pacemaker will detect a drop in my heart rate and is able to ‘kick in’ to prevent my heart from stopping and a seizure from taking place. On the 12th January 2023, I was fitted with my 3rd pacemaker, which has given me a much better quality of life!
I have been part of the STARS support group from the very start (over 25 years ago), the founder Trudie Lobban has been a godsend to my family and I want to give something back to STARS by fundraising for this event!
STARS offers information, education, awareness, and support to anyone affected by unexplained loss of consciousness, blackouts, transient loss of consciousness, RAS, PoTS and all forms of syncope. STARS aims to ensure that anyone presenting with unexplained loss of consciousness receives the correct diagnosis, the appropriate treatment, informed support, and sign-posting to the appropriate medical professional. We hope that with greater public and professional awareness we can aid early and correct diagnosis of the condition and allow people to lead a more normal life.
STARS are now recognised worldwide and the amount of work put in by volunteers is remarkable!
Thank you STARS!
