Story
Myself and Karl are running the London Landmarks Half Marathon for Dementia UK.
As well as turning 50 this year (and Karl last year), 2024 feels like the year to take on a challenge, to push myself but do something to not only get fitter but also to raise some money for a good cause. I have chosen Dementia Uk because my very special mum is living with dementia and I see her struggle with everyday tasks, being trapped in a totally different world to the life she once had and loved.
I am lucky, Mum still remembers me at the moment but I know there will be a day that I will walk into the room and.she will not recognise me. Mums Dementia feels like a bereavement to me, I miss her everyday, I miss my chats and laughs with her. Don’t get me wrong. I still talk to mum, but she finds it hard to find the words to talk back - I love it when she smiles at me and squeezes my hand.
And so, I will be 50 this year and have always put off the idea of doing a half marathon, but as a personal tribute to my mum, my grandparents, and many friends who have family suffering from this disease, this year feels the year to set myself this challenge. If mum can battle with dementia everyday, I can spend a few hours running.
Karl will be running with me and providing me with that much needed encouragement to keep me going (as he always does). Karl will also be raising money for Dementia Uk, so hopefully between us we can hit our fundraising target of £700.
Please only give if you can and would like to, any amount will be helpful. Your support and encouragement even better, especially if you see me out running !!
