Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
At sunrise on13th September 2022, GCF Bosnia will bring together a team of 50, committed to completing a 100km charity ride between the cities of Sarajevo and Goražde.
The ride will take the cyclists through the fields and valleys of Bosnia, rising into its mountains and dropping down into the city, finishing at
the school, to be welcomed by its children.
Brand new. bicycles and helmets will be provided for the riders, by the leading cycle shop chain in Bosnia, M-Bike. The group will ride these to Goražde, where they will be presented to the school, to initiate and establish a cycle club that will serve to promote exercise, healthier living and cycling proficiency in the area.
On September 14th, the day after the cycle ride and having stayed in mountain lodges above the city the night before, a new memorial will be opened in honour of the 6 British soldiers that gave their lives on United Nations duty as a part of Operation 'Grapple' in 1994.
The chosen memorial site will be co-located with an established memorial for one of the soldiers that died – Private Ben Hinton. A new viewing platform, with benches, a memorial plaque and a panorama map will be dedicated, with the townsfolk, local dignitaries, and representation from the U.K. Bosnian Embassy, U.K. Armed
Forces, in attendance. A proportion of funds raised will be allocated to this memorial.
The sponsorship monies are also utilised for substantial improvements, refurbishments of facilities and provision of equipment at the school in Goražde.
It was here, that local people, students and the former soldiers who served in that UNPROFOR peacekeeping force came together in 2012 and decided that they wanted to create a legacy which would see generations of children learning English to a good standard - at the same time as making their education a more formative and enjoyable experience.
In the minds of all those involved, this is a crucial way in which we are able to give joint thanks, to all the soldiers who sacrificed time, energy and their lives, to protect families and children of Bosnia, at that time.
