Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
So, I've decided to run the half marathon on the 14 March. Ok, so it's not a full marathon. Boo, hoo, hoo.
However, me and my mate Dan only decided to do it last week upon realising our journalism course was ending and we would officially be, as of Monday, unemployed and in need to do something 'productive'.
Amnesty International have kindly given the pair of us the opportunity to represent them in the Adidas Silverstone Half Marathon, and we need to raise £400 each before the 25 April, so here's your chance to help us out.
The charity looks to stand up for humans wherever justice, freedom and truth are denied - the modern day William Wallace appreciation society if you will. I have chosen to raise both awareness and money for a Turkish lad called Ferhat Gerҫek, who was shot by police and is now paralysed from the waist down.
On 7 October 2007, just days before his 18th birthday, Ferhat was with a group of people selling copies of a legal left wing magazine in the district of Yenibosna. Police allegedly attempted to stop the group and, in the dispute that ensued, opened fire.
Several police officers face trial for wounding with intent as the result of excessive use of force, but there are flaws in the investigation, including 'lost' evidence and none have been suspended from duty and the perpetrator may evade justice.
Conversely, Ferhat is being prosecuted in connection with the dispute and could face 15 years imprisonment if found guilty.
But guilty of what - the freedom of speech? With the help of Amnesty International, I want to raise awareness of this case, and others the charity looks to support.
