Story
UPDATE - we've smashed the initial target of £30,000 pushed on through £50,000 & £75,000 is in sight with a few more turns of the pedals! The support has been beyond my wildest dreams of what I thought I could raise when I signed up - but they sky is the limit !
In amongst the chaos that has been the last 12 months, non Covid charities have had a difficult time of it but Cancer hasn’t gone away. This Summer (19 June – 11 July) I’ll be cycling the FULL Tour de France route one week ahead of the pros to raise £1mio for Cure Leukaemia with a team of 24 other cyclists led by Leukaemia survivor and Ex-Premier league & England footballer, Geoff Thomas – to put the challenge into perspective:
- 3,383KM distance (2,100 Miles – more than most people drove in 2020)
- 41,150m vertical elevation (4.65x the height of Everest)
- Between 5-8 hours on the bike per day for 21 days
What the money being raised will be used for:
The £1mio will be used to entirely fund the Trials Acceleration Programme (TAP) for 12 months. The TAP consists of 12 research nurses based in the UK’s biggest cities conducting clinical trials across the UK & a highly skilled group of statisticians and trial co-ordinators based in Birmingham advancing treatment for Leukaemia with their results. This network enables accelerated setup and delivery of potentially life-saving blood cancer clinical trials, this gives patients from a UK catchment area of over 20 million people access to treatments not currently available through standard care.
I personally have met many of the employees and key members of the TAP and really have been blown away at the dedication and pure sacrifice that the small team give. Geoff Thomas who I’ve become friends with over the last 18 months since signing up for the challenge is a direct beneficiary of one of these trials.
