Story
Hi, I’m Nick and I’m an Employment Co-ordinator with the
Jersey Employment Trust, which helps people with a disability or long-term health condition gain and maintain work. I have been inspired to set up this challenge after hearing about the Virtual London Marathon, but it turns out I can’t take part in that if I am using wheels.
I have been taking part in Jersey Sport’s Cycle Without
Limits project for about eight months now. The recumbent handcycle is an excellent piece of kit which allows me to exercise and ride a bike, something I would not otherwise be able to do. The freedom of being on three wheels is great. I enjoy it but it’s very hard work. You could compare the movement on this handcycle to rowing a boat through heavy waters.
To complete 26 miles is likely to take me seven hours. All funds raised will be split equally between Acorn Enterprises and Jersey Sport’s Cycle Without Limits centre.
Acorn offer great job and training opportunities to people who have a disability or long-term health condition. And I wouldn’t be in a position to do this without the help and support of the people on the Cycle Without Limits project, part of Jersey Sport which is a charity. They have given me great encouragement and supplied the bike. Fundraising for them will allow them to support more people, who wouldn’t otherwise be able, to experience the freedom of cycling.
I also want to raise awareness of disability as a wider issue. People are only disabled if due to the environment or situation they
cannot be involved or included. As a society we are striving for equality in all areas of life and this must include everyone who has a disability, no matter what it is. If we can provide the right environment, equipment, and support to ensure that anyone and everyone with disabilities are always included, then we can ensure that they may have a disability, but they are not disabled.
Thank you for your support.
Nick
