Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Having lost both my Mum and Dad to cancer in the last 5 years I know first hand the impact cancer has on families.
Together, with your support I would like to help Cancer Research UK in achieving their ambitious targets. Between 1970 and 2010 survival rates for people with cancer doubled to 50%. By 2030 Cancer Research is targeting a survival rate of 75%.
Cancer Research have given me some details of how funds I raise might be used and what the impact on patients and families would be. Based on this I have set my initial target at £2,000 but I would love to smash this figure and make a real difference.
You too can make this difference by sharing my page with anyone who might be interested in sponsoring me - that may be someone I know or anyone affected by the impacts of cancer.
- £2000 covers the cost of printing 30,000 leaflets for waiting rooms across the country-empowering thousands of people to take control and stack the odds in their favour. This is just once example of how we’re tackling early diagnosis and prevention.
- £3000 is the cost of running Cancer Chat for 1 week helping thousands of people through very difficult times. We all know it is good to talk. Cancer Chat is a moderated discussion forum. It’s a safe online space open to anyone to discuss any aspect of the disease, from symptoms and treatment, to living with cancer. During the last year the site was viewed around 2.3 million times and 14,690 messages were posted.
- £5500 covers the cost of a trial for one month aiming to better understand brain cancer to accelerate towards faster diagnosis and groundbreaking new therapies.
- £9000 covers the cost of a trial for one month aiming to accelerate progress to find better treatments for men with prostate cancer, helping more granddads, dads, sons and brothers to beat the disease.
- £10,000 covers the cost of a trial for one year aiming to improve radiotherapy for women with cervical cancer by testing pioneering new targeted types of radiotherapy, to pack more of a punch to cancer cells and reduce side effects for patients.
To put my challenge into context it will be 25 years since I last ran a marathon, although I was in my prime back then it was still a real struggle. Please support me in every way you can, most importantly through sponsoring me but also encouraging me through training and on the day.
