Story
Myself (Nick) and my wife (Emma) tragically lost our baby Daisy on the 21st Feb 2011. Daisy died in the final stages of labour despite being a low risk, healthy and seemingly uncomplicated pregnancy. What was meant to be a joyous welcome for our first born child devastated us as parents and our family and friends.
Soon after losing Daisy we discovered Sands and were staggered to find out that 17 babies are stillborn or die before they are one month old every day in the UK. This rate of stillbirth and neonatal death has remained unchanged for more than a decade.
Sands research has identified that a third of babies who are stillborn are perfectly formed (like Daisy), and their deaths could be prevented through new reliable diagnostic tests which are urgently needed. Routine antenatal care is failing to detect the babies who need help like Daisy.
I am fund raising for Sands by running with Team Daisy with our friends and family running in events like the Bournemouth Bay 10K. With your support we can help Sands fund crucial research and develop a joined up national strategy working with health professionals on how to prevent stillbirths and neonatal deaths.
