Story
My journey with Type 1 Diabetes started in September 2016 when I was just 6 years old. I am now just 8.
After constantly drinking and going to the toilet throughout the night I was taken to the doctors and the next thing I was sat in a hospital bed having lots of blood taken and tests, I was very scared.
Then my Mummy and I were told that I had Type 1 Diabetes. I cried…Mummy cried…We didn’t know anything about this horrible disease. We were told my pancreas wasn’t making insulin like it should so it needed help.
The hospital looked after me for 2 days and very quickly Mummy had to learn how to test my blood and inject me with Insulin at least 4 times a day. So now every time I eat my blood is tested and carbohydrates counted and the correct amount of Insulin has to be injected. Things aren’t so easy now. There are a lot of things that affect my blood glucose levels…exercise, weather, stress, excitement …actually anything!!
Sometimes I go low and have to have glucose tablets and sometimes I go high and need extra insulin which means lots more finger pricks and injections which keep me alive.
Here I am 18 months later running the 5k park run every Saturday {quicker than my Mummy!!!}
Everyday is different and some days can be very hard but I always smile and don’t let Type1 get in my way.
As a young child I face having to have over 19,000 Insulin injections and over 50,000 blood tests by the time I reach 18 years old. So far this week I have had 56 finger pricks and my fingers are sore, 39 injections of insulin …ouch!
Please Please help Nick to raise lots of money to find a cure for me and all the other Type 1’s.
Thank you all for your support.
Love
Brooke
