Story
Trauma is a physical injury to the body. Examples are injuries caused by falls from height, road traffic accidents, industrial equipment, violence or terrorist attacks. Often it is the result of an unexpected incident with devastating and long-lasting effects.
Trauma kills 46 people in the UK every day and leaves a further 190 people with life-limiting disabilities. It's one of the biggest causes of death and disability in the UK, yet less than 1% of medical research funding is spent in this area.
The Transform Trauma Appeal aims to raise £1 million to save the lives of thousands of people who suffer trauma, and improve the quality of life for survivors.
The Clinical Trials Unit is coordinating the CRYOSTAT-2 Study (www.cryostat2.co.uk), a Clinical Trial looking to improve outcomes for Trauma Patients with Major Trauma Haemorrhage (life threatening bleeding) which is taking place across the UK and in North America.
We are passionate about research in this area because Trauma kills 17,000 people a year. That's 17,000 families affected. That's 17,000 sets of mums and dads, husbands, wives, partners, children, brothers, sisters, best friends and colleagues.
If we can be uncomfortable for between 2-4 hours and we help Bart's to potentially save just one family from the effects of Trauma, we will be pretty proud. And tired. But triumphant. This is the first time we have attempted a half marathon, and one of us has taken up running at an age when other people are giving up because of injuries!
