Descend to the End 23rd & 24th June 2022
Three brave and slightly mad members of the Nexus team are taking on the massive challenge of riding from our offices in Exeter to Lands End to raise money for Hospiscare. This gruelling route will take place over 2 days (23rd & 24th June 2022) and will see them cycle an incredible 150 miles through beautiful Devon & Cornwall.
The team have been route-planning for this nifty 150-mile trek. The elevation changes along the hilly route are equivalent to going up and down Ben Nevis three times. Other important details, such as where to stash pasties to eat en-route, have also been worked out.
Hospiscare provide vital support for people across Devon with life-limiting illnesses, they rely heavily on support from the public and have been hit financially due to Covid. Nexus Open Systems have made them our charity of the year and hope to raise lots of money to help them.
Stuart Wilson, Nexus Managing Director, said:
“I have great admiration for our team of volunteers at Nexus for organising and putting themselves up for another arduous ride, especially as some of the riders also rode the 100 mile coast to coast on mountain bikes from Plymouth to Ilfracombe not too long ago. This ride will be approximately 50% longer and, thankfully, they’ve clearly forgotten how demanding the last one was.
“We have a number of fundraising events scheduled throughout the year for various charities, however, we’ve supported Hospiscare for quite some time and it’s now become a part of what makes us tick. Most of us will understand and appreciate the very existence of Hospiscare, let alone all the special support they provide so we’re proud to be able to help in some small way.
“I plan to ride with the main riders for part of the journey and in support (subject to the provision of cake, coffee and anti-chafe cream) and wish them good luck! All sponsorship is very gratefully received and goes entirely to Hospiscare.”
Riders taking on this mammoth task are Nexus engineers Neale Frood, Simon Gammon, Mark Runciman, with an appearance by Operations Director John Brett along the way!

“I'm looking forward to the 'Descend to the End' challenge. It's a great opportunity to raise funds for Hospiscare. I've been told I can't use my motorbike for this event, however, tying a rope to the back of Neale’s bike and get towed along is still allowed”

“Really happy to be raising money for such a great cause as “Hospiscare”; this will be the furthest I’ve cycled over two days but looking forward to the amazing views along the way.
