Thanks for taking the time to visit New Ways Emergency Drought Appeal page.
For the last 18 months there has been a severe lack of rain in the Northern region of Turkana, Kenya. You will have seen the impact of this on the local people via the TV & papers reporting. More information is on the website www.newways.org.uk and http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-12371130 or http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/kenya-is-on-the-brink-of-its-own-disaster-2329287.html
To meet the emergency needs of those most vulnerable in the area – children, pregnant women & nursing mothers as well as the elderly – over 6,000 people we need £30,000 per month until December 2011. We are trying to raise the funds in partnership with the MCSPA’s Spanish NGO.
All support will be most gratefully received by these beneficiaries. Please take time to look at the photo’s
Key Projects:
Care for 4,700 children between the ages of 2 and 7 in the 27 nutrition centres already in existence.
As a result of the drought, the number of children attending these centres has increased by approximately 50%, going from 3,000 to more than 4,500 (many nomad families are now flocking to them and we actually have 4,762 registered). At the same time the cost of staple food in Kenya (maize and beans) has also increased by 50% in the last 3 months.
Care for pregnant women and lactating mothers the aim is to distribute of 1kg of maize and beans to 1,080 women every month.
The Elderly without family support. MSCPA have identified 240 elderly people in the area that are without food and aim to provide them with a combination of 1kg of maize and beans every month
