Story
We are seven women who are are proud to be part of Newquay Rowing club.
We are wanting to make a difference and support the Cornish people through this challenge to row from Sennen to the Isles of Scilly. This is the first time an all women's crew have done this from our club and feel this is the right time to do it.
During lockdown, we all struggled, like many of us, to stay fit, healthy and connected to our friends. Through the bonds we have made through Newquay Rowing Club, we trained virtually together, constantly checking on each other's wellbeing. The idea to do this challenge came from many an hour (and text) working together, whilst being apart, still feeling part of the club.
The row celebrates the 100th anniversary of the formation of Newquay Rowing Club, formed in 1921, a time when women were not allowed to take part in the sport. We will be rowing the pilot gig 'SPY' 27 nautical miles from Sennen Cove to St Mary's on the Isles of Scilly. With no dedicated coxswain on board, we will all be taking in turn to take the helm, as we navigate the journey from the mainland to islands.
We hope to row on the 4th August but have three more dates in line if the weather is not on our side.
Thank you for everyone who donates money. We really do appreciate every penny. We are also raising money of the Island Haven, please visit that page too!
