The History of The Salvation Army in Newcastle Upon Tyne...  Where it all started

Revival swept through Newcastle in early 1879 after six young 'Hallelujah Lasses' marched across the swing bridge from Gateshead and began preaching to the crowds that thronged Sandhill. Sunday Meetings were held initially in a packed Tyne Theatre and within just 6 weeks The Salvation Army in Newcastle had grown at a spectacular rate - attracting1000 converts.

The new corps held a number of tenancies including an old brewery and the New Jerusalem Temple on Percy Street - but in 1889 the foundation stones for a new 'Salvation Cathedral' were laid between Bath Lane and Westgate Road and that's where Newcastle City Temple Corps remained, faithfully working and witnessing for the next 119 years. 

Despite having been modernised in 1984, spiralling maintenance costs, including costs associated with keeping the building in line with current legislation, meant that in 2008, Newcastle City Temple was forced to vacate these premises.

From 2008

Since 2008 the City Temple has been based at Brunswick Methodist Church, and it was always hoped that this would only be temporary arrangement until able to move to a new purpose-built hall. 

Today

After 14 years that hope is finally being realised - work commenced on the building of a new Worship and Community Centre in August 2021. Built on the site of the former Cowgate Methodist Church, Stamfordham Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, the project is now nearing its completion and it is hoped that we will soon be able to commence worship in our new hall in time for the Advent and Christmas season. 

2022 and beyond....

Over the course of its 142 year history to date, The Salvation Army in Newcastle upon Tyne, has always had at its heart the salvation of the people and the welfare of the community. We are very excited about the wonderful opportunities which this new hall will provide, not least because we firmly believe that it will enable us to serve the needs of those within the local community and wider City of Newcastle even more effectively.
