Dear Friends,
This October I am riding my bicycle to help the Tree Fund raise money for urban tree research. The ride is called the Tour des Trees.
I participated in my first Tour des Trees in 2001. YIKES, where did the time go? That 650-mile cycling fund-raiser started in Minneapolis, rolled down the Mississippi River into Iowa, and turned East at Galena, Illinois. Then it crossed Wisconsin to end in Milwaukee on the shores of Lake Michigan. I did not know if I would ever participate in a ride like this again. Training for a ride like this is a huge time commitment. Now 22 years late. I will do it again!
The 2023 Tour des Trees ride will be epic! It will start in Reno, Nevada and cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains, beginning with an 18-mile climb over Mt. Rose before descending to Lake Tahoe. The next day will feature even more climbing before descending along Angel’s Creek to Murphys, followed by a 110-mile ride to Modesto. Whew! Then it’s on to San Jose before a final grueling ascent over the Coast Range to arrive at Half Moon Bay on the Pacific Ocean.
My husband, Clem Desjardins, and I plan to ride together. Clem has been an arborist for as long as I have been a midwife. Together we look forward to planting trees and making presentations to community groups along the way to build support for the TREE Fund. The mission of the TREE Fund is to raise money to fund urban tree research. Please join me in the effort to expand, diversify, and strengthen our urban forests by making a generous gift to the TREE Fund that will help me to exceed my $4,000 fund-raising goal! Please click HERE, to link to my fund-raising page with instructions on how you can donate.
You may want to find out more about the TREE Fund by accessing the TREE Fund website. Maintaining our forests has become an ever-increasing challenge due to the ravages of imported pests and diseases as well as rapid changes and fluctuations in climate conditions. Please help give arborists the tools and knowledge they need to meet these challenges by funding urban tree research with a tax-deductible gift to the TREE Fund. Meanwhile I’ll do my best to get stronger with each training ride, knowing that your support is behind every pedal stroke it will take to get me from Reno to Half Moon Bay.
Stay safe,
Linda
