Neil's Rowing The Atlantic Ocean

Rowing The Atlantic Ocean · 5 November 2022
Statistics say 1 in 4 adults shall be affected by the debilitating disease- I was... for 7 years my late father suffered and it was agonising to see how quickly someone can lose their short term memory and the ability to undertake routine daily chores and the anger and frustration this develops.
I am setting out to raise awareness and money for Alzheimer's and those affected, by subjecting myself to an ocean row across the Atlantic...Tenerife to Antigua. My journey will be around 35 and 45 days (weather dependant) it sets off at the beginning December 2022, arriving mid January, and is a distance of circa 3000 nautical miles. There is a real possibly of 30ft waves and possible shark attack, yet I'm still determined to complete this gruelling challenge in order to raise vital funds for such a worthy cause.

Where Alzheimer's reduces the brain and its ability to recall names, places and recent occurrences; I shall be concentrating on a 3 hour block of time... rowing for 3 hours and then eating, sleeping and recovering for 3 hours... and then repeat through 24 hours of the day, 7 days per week and however many weeks the crossing takes.
My 3 hours of rowing shall mean concentration and focus to ‘the here and now’...making every rowing stroke better than the last and maintaining a rhythm and cadence....the very aptitude offered from a fully functioning brain, but at the same time, not taking this for granted. Every stroke shall represent a fight back against the plaque that causes the brain to diminish, every shift shall represent the friends and families who have to witness the deterioration of a loved one; each new day shall be the hope of a cure to Alzheimer's and the completion of the row shall be the culmination of experiencing mental and physical extremes to raise the profile of Alzheimer's Society.
My hope is to raise a substantial amount for Alzheimer's Society. Funds will aid the charity's great work in developing a cure for this depleting condition. Together with your greatly appreciated donations, we can beat this.
All donations are now going directly to the charity which allows for GiftAid contributions. Following a successful collection of £7,500 so far, this has offset a small percentage of the overall personal cost to undertake this challenge. My aim is to raise a further £17,500, with the total raised being £25,000.
Follow me through my mental and physical training and then come on board with me as I ‘close my eyes and pull like a dog!’
