WHY I'M RUNNING
Because I turn 50 in July, and this is how I've decided to spend my mid-life crisis. Sweatier than a sports car or a hair transplant, but cheaper.
SO WHY THE FUNDRAISING PAGE, THEN?
I'm raising money for Centrepoint because it's a great charity. It helps 10,000 homeless young people every year -- giving them a safe place to stay, and helping them with the education and training they need to gain employment and independence. This will be the eighth year that Paula and I have supported it and, having taken one of their precious marathon spots, I'd like to raise as much money for them as I can.
TOP 10 REASONS TO GIVE
1. You'll make a difference and it won't even hurt. It's worth stopping every once in a while to remember how incredibly lucky we are. What we consider a small sum could make a positive, life-changing difference to a young person who's been dealt a very different hand.
2. Stick it to The Man. HSBC will match the the first £1,000 I raise.
3. Stick it to me. I will match the next £1,000.
4. Stick it to the tax man. If you're a UK taxpayer, HM Treasury will give Centrepoint 25p for every £1 you donate.
5. It's my 50th birthday. I have a full sock drawer, a loving wife and two children who obey my every command ... what else could I possibly need? Donate to Centrepoint and make the world a nicer place.
6. There is no sixth thing. What, you're still reading? My fiftieth birthday isn't enough for you?
7. Peace and quiet. I last ran a marathon when I was 39. Give, and I promise not to ask you for money for at least another 10 years.
8. Everlasting fame. I'll name a blister after my biggest donor.
9. Necessity. I don't have that many friends -- if you don't give, who will?
AND IF NONE OF THOSE CONVINCE YOU...
10. For the puppy ... do it for the puppy!
On my own behalf, and on behalf of the Centrepoint team, thank you!
