Story

Hello and thank you for visiting my JustGiving page.

For many of you this will be the second event for which you have sponsored me in memory of my truly beautiful daughter Madeleine Maria Lineham who passed away suddenly from an Anaphylactic Shock on Tuesday 14th January 2014.  Maddie was just 10 years and 10 months old.

Maddie had never had an Anaphylactic Shock before but had suffered from mild allergies to chicken and dairy including eggs for most of her life.  She was also diagnosed as having Asthma when she was 2 years old.  On the 14th January 2014 Maddie tried a crumb under supervision from a very well known brand of health bar sold extensively around the world.  The bar had four natural ingredients to which she was not allergic previously.  She had an immediate reaction with her lips tingling and strong abdominal pain and was sick on arrival at the doctor's all less than 10 minutes after trying the crumb.  A short while later Maddie began to struggle with her breathing.  The alarm was raised but it was too late.  Maddie bravely spoke her final few words to my wife Verity and then collapsed.

Still the trigger to Maddie's Anaphylactic Shock is unknown but I do know this....there is a lack of awareness within the medical profession about who is at risk of Anaphylaxis.  Statistical research has found that 60 of the 124 fatalities due to Food Induced Anaphylaxis between 1992 and 2012 in the United Kingdom were known to have a food allergy and asthma and had never experienced anaphylaxis before.  This proves that if your child has asthma and allergies they are at risk and should therefore be prescribed with an adrenaline auto injector such as EpiPen.  Maddie should have had an EpiPen and we should have been made aware of the risk and symptoms.

If you have friends or family whose children suffer from ASTHMA please ask the parents if that child ALSO HAS AN ALLERGY (mild or severe).  If they do, please ask if they carry an EPI PEN or another form of adrenaline auto injector.  If they don't please tell them THEY SHOULD HAVE ONE because STATISTICS PROVE their child is at risk of having an ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK.  Please ask them to speak to their GP asap asking the GP to PRESCRIBE AN EPI PEN, just in case.

Verity and I would give everything we have for someone to have told us this fact a few years ago because had we known, Maddie would very likely be alive today or at least would have had a fighting chance to survive her first Anaphylactic Shock because we would have insisted her allergy specialist and/or GP prescribed her with an EpiPen.

As many of you know London was my first ever marathon last year and the place was provided to me by the Anaphylaxis Campaign (AC) http://www.anaphylaxis.org.uk  so I could raise money to help them raise awareness of Anaphylaxis.  This time I had already entered and have been training for Paris when I was convinced by a friend to use the opportunity to run for AC again.  Raising awareness of Anaphylaxis is now part of what I must continue to do in Maddie's memory and also it keeps many people talking about my youngest daughter who would have been 13 years old on 20th March this year.

God Bless you Mads x
