With a small group of friends, I'll be riding 500 miles in six days from the transplant centre in Edinburgh to the one in Oxford via several other hospitals on the way. I'm aiming to raise £1000 for the charity Give a Kidney . They want to raise awareness of the desperate need for more people to donate a kidney to an unrelated person with end stage renal failure. Having a kidney transplant will transform the life of someone with kidney failure who is otherwise dependent on dialysis several times a week to stay alive. Despite years of publicity there is still a shortfall in the number of kidneys transplanted from people who have just died, so Give a Kidney are raising awareness that healthy people can donate a kidney without putting their own health at risk. "One's enough"!

One of our group has already donated a kidney to someone unknown to them to help transform their life. He may be in his 70s but he's coming on this 500 mile ride with us to show you can still take part in an endeavour like this with just the one kidney!
