Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My dad, Neil, died on 10.09.2014 at the age of 63 from metastatic prostate cancer. He had been diagnosed 18 months prior to this, when it was already advanced, and his prognosis was poor. It was an incredibly aggressive cancer, and with the current limited treatment available to him, he didn't stand a chance.

I'm a doctor, and I have always been a huge advocate of good end of life care, which I don't feel dad received. Everybody has the right to a good death, and to achieve this, more resources and education need to be available. The NCPC believes that "everyone approaching the end of life has the right to the highest quality care and support, wherever they live, and whatever their condition." This can only be achieved with increased awareness and support.

I'm running Race to the Stones (www.racetothestones.com), a 100km ultramarathon to raise money for the National Council for Palliative Care (NCPC).

When dad and I had our last conversation before he died, we spoke about visiting Avebury in the past and how much we both liked it, so this race, finishing at the neolithic stone circle in Avebury is particularly fitting to be done in his memory.
