Story

Hi everyone!

Thanks for visiting my page!
Here’s a brief background on my mission to raise money for Action Cancer & conquer Mount Kilimanjaro!

THE STORY

Over a year & a half ago I decided to volunteer to help raise money for Action Cancer Charity.

My Mother has been heavily involved in the past with many charity groups & is an avid trekker, having completed some impressive achievements, including The Great Wall of China, Trek Cambodia, The Rockies & The Camino Santiago.

Having experienced the preventative aid that Action Cancer can provide first hand when my own grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer & was able to successfully operate & beat the spread. This gave her many more years of valuable time that I’ll always cherish gaining.

I’ve decided to pick one of the most challenging Treks & put Mount Kilimanjaro to bed all whilst raising money for an excellent charity close to my own heart.

THE CHARITY

We’ve all had a close family member or friend impacted by cancer and it’s only a waiting game for us to hear devastating news.

In NI alone, someone receives a cancer diagnosis every hour, of every day, and one in two of us will receive a cancer diagnosis in our lifetime.

Action Cancer aims to prevent receiving this devastating news through both early detection & initial prevention.

Annually, Action Cancer aims to provide early detection, support, and prevention services to over 25,000 people in NI.

£4 million every year needs to be donated & raised to enable the delivery of this vital service.

THE CHALLENGE (14-24th Sept 2023)

Mount Kilimanjaro located in Tanzania, East Africa

Tallest Free-Standing Mountain in the world at 5,895m. In comparison, Slieve Donard stands at 850m tall.

CHALLENGE GRADING: EXTREME (+5000m)

DISTANCE: 66km (42 miles) over a total of 7 days.

ALTITUDE: Air pressure and oxygen availability is about 60% of that at sea level. At 6000m, every breath is only producing just over half as much oxygen. Altitude sickness is highly likely.

TERRAIN ZONES:

Wet Rainforest  >  Alpine Desert  >  Arctic zone

BIGGEST FEAR: NO SHOWERS FOR 7 DAYS

All donations however small or large are greatly appreciated in helping raise fund for such an excellent cause!
