When I was 10 years old, just 4 years ago, my life was tragically changed. I had lost one of the most important men in my life due to working for the police force, my dad. My father worked for the Metropolitan Police service of London and worked there for about 4 years. He has been a police officer for many years. He was coming home from work one day of April 2009 and a driver who was on the wrong side of the road, collided with my dad’s vehicle. Unfortunately, my father was on a motorcycle so he died due to colliding with this vehicle.
In July 2009 I attended a survivors weekend run by a charity called Care Of Police Survivors. Care Of Police Survivors are a charity who help families re-build their lives after such a tragic incident. They provide support for the families and run several events for all survivors to attend and let them forget all about their issues for the weekend. The main event that is held every year is the annual survivors weekend.
The survivor’s weekend is a weekend fully funded by COPS and it is an amazing weekend with many activities for all ages. The weekend starts with a drinks reception with hotel check-in and the COPS shop and tombola is all running to raise money. Then we have a dinner in the evening whilst the children make teddy bears, pottery and play games for the evening. On the Saturday, the children go to a theme park; the teenager’s go to ‘go–ape!’ and the adults go to Warwick Castle and a garden center. The Saturday evening is the most important part, we have a formal meal with live music and a raffle/auction to raise funds for COPS. The last day is the Sunday and that is the day we have a memorial service, which has speeches, a wreath laying service and a roll of honor.
COPS have done so much for my family by supporting us and we are always being invited to any events they hold. Starting from last year I started fundraising for COPS. I had a stall at the weekend last year and I started making my own personalized key rings for COPS. I then started a business making sweet treats and hampers to sell to people to raise money for COPS. This years weekend in July I am going to be having my own raffle as well as the main COPS one. So, I am asking for companies to donate items for me to use as prizes in my raffle.
