Over the past year & until December we are raising money to build school classrooms in Mozambique. In August we will visit Mozambique & volunteer our time to build the classrooms & see the impact it will have on the community.
Our Why?
Despite the growing issues with poverty in the UK, here every child has the right to a free education. There are enough places in schools for every child, irrespective of race, gender and financial situation. This is not the case everywhere!!
Mozambique is the 3rd poorest country in the world. More than half the people live below the poverty line, and life expectancy is just 50 years. One in seven children dies before their fifth birthday. Education in Mozambique is amongst the worst in sub-Saharan Africa.
In Mozambique, only 6 out of 10 children complete primary school and only 20% of children attend secondary school. The statistic is far less for girls. Can you imagine just 2 in 10 children attending school? What becomes of the 8 who cannot?
55% of adults are illiterate and 30% of children leave school unable to read and write. In rural communities, like Manhica where poverty levels are higher, the problem is far worse and up to 84% of people are illiterate.
Working as teachers & specialising in Inclusion and pastoral support, we spend our working lives doing the best we can to help the children in our communities attend school, feel safe and happy and achieve what they need build a future. Through this project we are taking small steps to helping a struggling community to do the same!
We will be building classrooms in the Condlana School in the Manhica district. There is a desperate need for classrooms in Mozambique, due to a lack of governmental funding and an ever-increasing intake of pupils each year. Currently, whole classes of pupils are studying under trees in the school playground as there are too many children, and not enough classrooms. For children in the UK the chance to learn outside is an exciting & rare opportunity. For these children studying outside in the filthy & hot conditions without proper resources makes the children all the more likely to stop attending school or contract fatal illnesses. These challenges hamper the pupils’ personal development, further exacerbating the cycle of poverty in the area.
Please help us to help them!
