Story

Through #LeoForTommys we are aiming to raise £5000 for Tommys - the Baby Charity. We have a team running the London Landmarks Half Marathon in 2018, where Tommy's are the main charity partner. Please help our team members raise as much money as possible for such a fantastic charity.

In January 2016, Leo Phoenix was stillborn at 37 weeks. He weighed 6lb 4oz, and was born on the 17 Janruary 2016 at 2:33am.

His death was completly unexpected, and has since devastated us, his parents, and our families. He had a post-mortem and we discovered that his placenta was too small compared to his weight. As a result, he failed to maintain his growth potential and his growth slowed towards the end of his pregnancy. We didn't know this at the time, but we now know so much more about pregnancy and the various complications that can occur.

We soon discovered the charity, Tommys. They fund a number of research and maternity clinics throughout the country to help prevent miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth. 10 babies a day are stillborn in the UK, and 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. Tommy's are working so hard to improve these statistics, and prove daily that baby loss is not 'just one of those things' and can be prevented.

Dr Alexander Heazell works from the Tommy's Research Centre at the St Marys Hospital in Manchester and was able to review Leo's post mortem and help us understand more about why he died. He has continued to support us through two pregnancies - one that sadly ended in miscarriage at 6 weeks, and our third (due in July 2017).

We have been able to attend a specific Rainbow Clinic in Manchester for those going through Pregnancy After Loss and they have been able to scan the placenta and make sure that its size and structure are okay - this is something that most hospitals in the UK are unable to do.

Tommy's have also supported us through the Tommy's Midwives helpline, providing emotional support through the anxieties of pregnancy after loss. They have also helped us share Leo's story and break the silence around stillbirth and miscarraige. In March 2017, our blog 'The Legacy of Leo' was nominated for a Tommy's Mums Voice Awards, and we couldn't be prouder to help such an amazing charity raise more awareness, and fund critical research.

Please follow along and see what we are up to to help save babies lives.

Thank you - Leo's Mummies, Jess & Nat
