On 26th May this year my dear Grandmother would have been celebrating her 94th birthday. Nothing would have made her happier than sitting in the sunshine, a glass of champagne in her hand, surrounded by her friends and family celebrating another wonderful year of life and laughter. Sadly Granny passed away this year on 3rd January from cancer. Granny was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, and to the end, she fought the disease with courage and determination. She treasured the good days and fought bravely through the bad, and throughout her journey she was surrounded by the love and adoration of her family and friends.
The day my Granny was diagnosed with cancer, I sat in the Breast Cancer Clinic with her and she looked around the room; she turned to me and said how sad she felt that so many young women were facing the diagnosis in the prime of their lives and reflected on how blessed she was to have reached her 90s before facing her terminal diagnosis.
As a doctor I have cared for and treated countless women with the condition, but nothing could have prepared me for my emotional journey in caring for and loving my Grandmother to the end.
1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives.
We can all do something to help, and I'd like to ask for your support in my effort:
My Pledge
On 25th May I will be running in the
Bupa 10 000 in memory of my wonderful Grandmother, to raise money for the Breast Cancer Campaign.
Just sixth months ago I laced up my trainers and set off to run for the first time. That first day I couldn't run more than 100 meters without having to stop and walk. Since then I've trained hard and I plan to run 100 times that initial distance. I'm going to run 10 000 meters, that's 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), with my husband David (
www.justgiving.com/DavidCJGreen10k) and my brother James at my side to keep me running to the finish line
How you can help
My part in this is going to be hard - I'm following a training programme to improve my speed and endurance, and I've pledged to raise at least £200 for Breast Cancer Campaign in the process.
Your part is simple. Any donation that you can make to support me will be going to the
Breast Cancer Campaign - a fantastic charity funding breast cancer research projects that provide the greatest potential to benefit patients.
Anything you can offer will be welcomed.
Every donation will be treasured.
Parting thoughts
I hope that in my lifetime breast cancer will become a survivable illness, who knows, I may even see a cure; but without the support from people like you and I, that dream can never be a reality.
Let's make it happen.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and thank you for your support.
