Story
The 3 Peaks Challenge is one of the UK’s best known mountain challenge events, which involves climbing the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales. At midday on Wednesday 7th June 2023 a team of 21 climbers made up of 11 EMCOR UK employees and 10 supply chain partners will commence the ascent of Ben Nevis, Scotland. This will be followed by Scafell Pike, England which will be climbed during the middle of the night and finishes at Mount Snowdon, Wales. The challenge is to climb the 3 highest mountains in the UK in just a 24-hour period. To complete the challenge the team must complete the 26 miles of walking, 11,182ft total ascent and 462 miles of travelling before midday on Thursday 8th June.
We are doing this challenge to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, and our collective aim is to raise £62,483 which would pay for a Macmillan Nurse for 1 year, helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support.
Here’s my story as to why I am part of the climbing team......
My Dad was honestly the bestest man you could ever meet, he was so full of life, optimism and energy, he would even rock the dance floor with some dodgy dance moves!
To my Dad I was known as his princess and although being 1 of 5 Children, I know I was his favourite and so does my Sister and Brothers who no doubt will be smiling when they read this.
It will be 9 years on 23rd June 2023 that my Dad passed away and there is never a day that I don't miss him or look up at the sky or a photo and think of him.
My Dad was such an inspiration and even when he was told he had months to live after being diagnosed with Stomach Cancer, he planned his own funeral (which we were told was a first for the funeral directors) and tried to do as many things on his bucket list as possible including; a VIP tour to Manchester United Stadium including meeting Alex Ferguson and David Beckham and a route 66 party, where he dressed up as a Cheerleader, if you knew my Dad, only he could pull it off 😊.
I watched my Dad go through some grueling treatment and never did he stop smiling or give up, which is where I take my positivity.
As I write this, I find it hard still not to shed a tear or to bring up those emotions once again. I will never forgot the moment when my Dad passed away, I was by his side with my Mum, Sister and young Brother. My Mum and I shared a hot chocolate and we all shared stories and smiled, which sounds so bizarre when you are in that situation. At that point, my Dad sadly took his last breath and I truly believe that for him was his way of saying he was ready to let go.
With every step I take and however hard or impossible it may seem, I will be thinking of my Dad every second of those climbs and how despite the challenges, ill health, tiredness that my Dad faced, I can and WILL do this for him and am able to celebrate his life, his achievements and legacy.
My Dad is my hero and who knows, I may even do a dodgy dance at the top of the mountain!!
So I ask you kindly to give what you can and remember as played at my Dads funeral and chosen by him “always look on the bright side of life !”
