Story

On Friday 20th May at 5pm, Nash & Co will be holding a 24 hour indoor cycle ride to raise money for Hugs Children Cancer Charity.

How it will work:-

We will have two stationary indoor gym bicycles in the Nash & Co reception. The two bikes will be running alongside each other. Two cyclists will be cycling at all times throughout the 24 hour period.

The cycle ride will start at 5pm on Friday 20th May 2021 and then end at 5pm on Saturday 21st May 2021 with the cyclists cycling in 1 hour intervals- with some cyclists doing 2 hours each.

We will be updating our progress during the 24 hours and calculating how far we have cycled, as well as posting stories on our Instagram page.

OUR MILEAGE GOAL IS:  This year we are headed abroad to Toulouse, France- that’s a total of 1062km!!!

Why are we doing this?:-

We are aiming to raise funds for a local Plymouth charity- Hug Children’s Cancer Charity.

Hugs was set up by the Hallam family after their son Henry was diagnosed with cancer at just 3 years old. The cancer Henry was diagnosed with is called Neuroblastoma, a nervous system cancer which spreads rapidly and is difficult to treat.  The family were given a poor prognosis and treatment would be long and in the children’s cancer treatment centre in Bristol. The family from Plymouth ended up in Bristol for 16 months while Henry went through gruelling and intense treatment.  Many families that they met on their journey came and went home within weeks and the Hallam family stayed the whole 16 months focusing day by day on getting Henry home. In the 16 months of treatment the family grew to know many families whose children were cruelly taken by neuroblastoma and often questioned if Henry would be next.

The family vowed that they would make a difference to other families on this long and hard journey….and Hugs Children’s Cancer Charity was born!

The main priorities for the charity are to provide emotional support to families, so no one feels they are battling alone.  To provide financial support so that families can either pay their bills or pay towards a holiday/treats, giving families a chance to make memories, memories that many families will treasure a lifetime as their precious children are taken far too soon. To support research into childhood cancer, Neuroblastoma so that one day better more effective treatments can be found and one day to find a cure.

What will my donation go towards:-

The funds we raise will go towards Hugs’ three main objectives this year:

1. Henry’s Hideout- A beautiful cottage in Cornwall which is well used by families who have a child with cancer or have lost a child to cancer, offering respite to those families for three night stays.

2. Family days away and a Children’s ball- This year Hugs will be taking families for a trip to Harry Potter World and to Longleat Safari park. Many families feel isolated due to treatment and these trips help bring families together who have had the same experience. There will also be a Children’s ball at Christmas with food and drink, and a special gift for each of the children including their siblings.

3. Care packages and vouchers- Your donations will go towards providing vouchers to the children and their families which will go towards food and other essentials, as well as toys, for the children who have long stays in hospital.

We are very excited to help raise these vital funds for Hugs and we thank you in advance for your kind donations and support.
