Story

Some of you may know of my latest sporting obsession and for those of you that don't here it is.....

In October this year I will participating in the Barcelona olympic distance triathlon (thats 1.5 km swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run). By the time the 18th of October comes around I'll have 3 races under my belt by then, 2 sprints (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km) and one challenge (800m swim, 40km bike, 8km run), and with training 6 days a week (yup thats 5.30/6am starts 6 days a week!) I should be well prepared.

I'm doing my race in Barcelona for the architecture charity I volunteer for, ASF-UK. ASF-UK is dedicated to bringing global development issues into architectural education so built environment professionals can use their skills to help vulnerable people shape their own environment. The organisation is run by a group of dedicated volunteers but his is not enough...any donation is very welcome!!!!!

ASF is making community and international development issues, in particular those impacting on disadvantaged and vulnerable people, integral to the practice and teaching of architecture. Our motivation for establishing ASF stems from an ambition to make architectural practice more relevant to the majority of the world’s population who are living in marginalised or poverty situations (both in the UK and worldwide). At architecture school students are taught to provide solutions to complex issues, however, often people in communities benefit more from being involved in the process of development than by being disempowered recipients of more often inappropriate solutions. It was these frustrations that lead a small team of dedicated volunteers to create ASF and in doing so establish an organisation that supports architectural education by teaching (and working with) the essential participatory tools and techniques required when working as a professional in community or international development projects.
