Story

Derek bravely fought stage four cancer for six years, and sadly lost his battle on the 26th of March after an added diagnosis of brain cancer.

Derek was admitted to Northampton General Hospital, Rowan Ward where he was looked after amazingly by the staff who worked there.

Unfortunately for Derek as he deteriorated there were no Swan rooms available which ment Derek had to remain on the main ward. As a family we found this very upsetting and devastating due to the nature of the circumstances we also felt bad  for the other families who were present on the ward at that time as most of patients were also going through cancer related issues.

Derek continued to deteriorate and within the last three hours of Derek's life a Swan Room was found on another ward, which Derek was then transferred to.

This room allowed us to be together as a family, say our goodbyes in private and have that time just us without anyone else watching or listening.

Rowan Ward had a room available but not the funding to convert it, which is why I am explaining the importance of Swan rooms which are for end of life patience and there families.  These rooms come equipped with facilities for families to stay over, tea coffee making facilities, comfy chairs, very piecful and calming environment, it cost approximately 3,500 to convert one room.

This is why we have choosen this charity in Dereks name.

Thank you
