Story
1 in 8 women will get breast cancer
Through research and awareness the survival rate has risen from just 50% in 1970 to 85% in 2018.
Whilst most associate breast cancer with older ladies - it does occur in younger women too. Around 2,200 women in the UK are age 39 or under when they are diagnosed.
When Kylie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 she was 36, Sarah Harding was 39 when she died of breast cancer in 2021. I was only 28 when I was diagnosed in 2002 so it’s never too early to start checking!
I am a strong believer in raising awareness because the more we talk about it the more likely cases can be spotted / caught early. If you have a concern please seek medical assistance and if you are not satisfied with your diagnosis so not be afraid to seek a second opinion - no one knows your body better than you
I was told when I found a lump that due to my age it was my hormonal and a cyst so nothing to be concerned about - my mother was in remission from breast cancer at the time (she was only 44 when she was diagnosed) so she insisted I see her specialist - fortunately for me he agreed to see me and thank goodness he did. Within 10 days I had been diagnosed with aggressive carcinoma in situ and the golf ball sized tumour removed - had I not seen him I could would have been luck to survive a year let alone see 30
I underwent six months of intensive chemotherapy, lost my hair and went through six weeks of daily radiotherapy to which each second of pain was worth it as I am here to share my story twenty years on.
I appreciate everyday as I know I could have had such a different take to tell - I was one of the very fortunate ones - cancer has touched so many lives if not directly then definately by association so we know that knowledge is key and by talking about it and raising awareness we are doing our bit.
Breast Cancer Now's wear it pink day is one of the biggest fundraising events in the UK. Taking place on 20 October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, thousands of amazing people will wear it pink in their communities, schools or workplaces, to help make life-changing research and care happen - it’s a good excuse to dress up and raise awareness 💕
Nanny Sam’s Cakes this year will be holding a fundraising raffle of which 100% of proceeds will be donated to this amazing cause - if we can help even just one person by raising awareness or giving a few pennies towards research then we have made a difference
Thank you for reading my story and for supporting my cause 💕 xxx
