Story
In honor of my beloved mother, Khalida, I am raising money for my birthday. My mother survived a stroke on Apr 28 2013. I was fortunate to be able to spend her last five years with her. They were a gift and I am thankful that I was able to be there with her at that time.
Not everyone who suffers from a brain injury has family support. My mother received countless hours of home health care with Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapists. For some patients, such therapies may be their only support system. During the Covid pandemic, these therapies are halted for so many who desperately need them.
Strokes and brain injury are incredibly isolating experiences in normal times. These injuries can alter your speech, your thoughts, your movement; sometimes all at once. It is a terrifying experience and I was only an outside witness.
What I do know is that although, on the outside, my mother appeared different, inside she was still the same her. And this was the same for all the BI patients I came to know. Rehabilitation therapy is a step to bringing back survivors of stroke and brain injuries to who they are; because the core is unchanging, even when the outside is altered.
This is why I have partnered with SameYou who are raising £250,000 to support people discharged from hospital after recent brain injury or stroke, to stay safe at home but without losing access to the recovery therapies & support they desperately need.
Their Emergency Response project will help people leaving hospital in-patient recovery wards, to stay connected to the therapy support services essential for their ongoing mental & physical recovery.100% of your donation will fund virtual therapy clinics so rehabilitation therapists can keep in touch & provide the essential help post acute stroke and brain injury patients need. This will also enable front line clinicians and nurses to focus on pandemic patients.
They are currently running virtual therapies through the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Boston USA.
Anything you can give will be so appreciated!
Thank you & Happy Ramadan!
