Story
My name is Nadeem Mughal and from the age of 14 I became registered blind, with an eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa, This affects me on a daily basis as I have very little vision. I have tunnel vision, blurred vision, and night blindness. I am unable to read any kind of printed material.
I attended a school for disabled children, before attending college for Visually Impaired students in Birmingham and The Royal National College for the Blind in Hereford. I thought being visually impaired would stop me from achieving my dreams of taking part in any sporting activities. However I play cricket, VI tennis , row on the river Wear & take part in archery. I keep fit in my local gym & regularly ride my tandem at Derby velodrome & around the Middlesborough area.
With the support of family and friends I’m living my dream and it feels fantastic.
So, if you have a dream, don’t just dream it turn your dreams into reality!
The reason I have chosen this particular event is because the money raised is going towards gaining a better understanding of and developing a treatment for Retinitis Pigmentosa , the condition I have, but also because it is a bigger challenge than I have done before.Cycling from Bowness to Tynemouth is something I have never even thought I could possibly do.
The event is over 3 days. Day one is the meet and greet and organising the equipment and bikes ready to get to the start line at Bowness. Day two is where the hard work begins cycling from Bowness to Haltwhistle, distance approx. 44 miles with around 850 metres of climbing. Day three is another hard day’s cycle from Haltwhistle to Tynemouth, distance approx. 56 miles with around 850 metres of climbing. Hopefully arriving at Tynemouth Priory in good time to celebrate with everyone else.
'I will be joined on my challenge by Peter Wright, who has kindly written some information about himself below'
My name is Peter Wright, a 61 year old club cyclist and owner of an old but classic 1992 Tandem. I am proud to be supporting the cause of Retina UK on the Tandem Challenge, the up and down cycling trek along Hadrians Wall. It’s a great leap of faith by Nadeem and part of his challenge to take on the tandem stokers role for it. We have never cycled together before and of course, ‘tandems don’t do hills’ (especially if old and heavy!). I know he is training seriously and grasping the Tandem Challenge. I look forward to as many as possible supporting him in this fundraising for Retina Uk, a truly worthy cause close to his heart. The fund raising is going to Nadeems cause, I intend to pay my way for the event.
