Story
We have decided to take part in a charity fund raising event for the Brain Tumour Charity. The event is called “Everest in the Alps” and will take place at the start of March in Switzerland where a small group of us (accompanied by ex-military personnel with life changing injuries) will endeavour to complete the 8,848m climb (the height of Everest) on skis over 4 days. Experiencing altitudes of up to 3,500m each challenger will burn through a daily average of 10,000 calories – the equivalent of running 3 back-to-back marathons!
The funds raised will support the work of the Everest Centre for Research into Paediatric low grade Brain Tumours; a ground-breaking international research initiative aiming to improve understanding of low grade childhood brain tumours, and to develop and test new treatments that are significantly less harmful to children’s quality of life. Some great friends of mine, have a boy called Toby who was diagnosed with a low grade (slower-growing) brain tumour on his brain stem at the age of five. I have watched Toby, now 14, grow and battle the most extraordinary mental and physical challenges whilst living with a tumour. Globally, over 26,870 children and young adults have a paediatric low grade brain tumour.
The Brain Tumour Charity is the world's leading brain tumour charity and the largest dedicated funder of research into brain tumours globally.
