Story
My wonderful dad, is living with Alzheimer's. It's such a cruel disease. In just three years Dad has gone from being able to drive and being independent to barely able to walk and needing 24 hour care. Carers have to wash and dress him in a morning and undress him and help him to bed at night. He can no longer read a book, or write and struggles to talk, he feels trapped in his own body. It's heart breaking to see how the disease affects him, and the impact on my amazing mum, who at 81 is his main carer.
Living 300 miles away and with lockdown I haven't been able to see or support them as I would like, I can only offer support by phone. They're lucky that my elder brother lives locally and helps them, along with good neighbours and their carers have been fantastic.
Taking part in the memory walk is something I can do to raise money for those affected by Dementia and research for a dementia free future, I don’t want others to suffer like Dad.
I'll be walking 5km, I know this doesn't sound like much of a challenge but I'm waiting for a hip replacement and certainly not as fit as I should be!! So it will be a challenge for me, but one I want to take on to raise funds. I would be very grateful for any sponsorship you are able to give.
Thank you,
Martin
Every three minutes someone in the UK develops dementia. That's the equivalent of around 225,000 people every year. By taking part in Memory Walk you are helping us walk for a dementia free future and help people affected by dementia. Once you donate, JustGiving will send your money directly to Alzheimer's Society. So it's the most efficient way to raise money, saving time and cutting costs for the charity. Let's take on dementia together!
